On the eve of Christmas Eve, having shed a garish 'R' for a no nonsense 'N', unprecedented success has been found in new places and with new people. Last night was a rare double feature for we few, we (sometimes) proud, and we found ourselves in the money not once, but twice on our trek through the Westport trivia scene.
Comprising a small part of a subdued Record Bar crowd, the laborious tangents of Forester were fittingly pacified by the smooth sounds of Caroline in what would be announced as her farewell from question writing tour. Many questions were Christmas themed and Carissa came through with several correct answers in categories ranging from carols to movies. Following a steady game where no riots were lost and, better yet, no riots were stolen, our path led us to third place going into the final question.
The final category was declared to involve quotes. Fresh off our second place showing Tuesday, we placed a conservative bet of zero leaving our collective balls clear of any and all walls. This proved the best course of action as we were unable to come up with the fact that the book of Genesis was the reading from the Apollo 8 mission. However, our own mission was accomplished in that only two teams knew the answer: the first place team and our friendly foes, Hamma Thyme. Fortunately for us, Hamma Thyme was not only trailing, but risked few if not zero points themselves. With our team of three (Dan, Carissa, and Lance), we split the second place total of $43 leaving a dollar as tribute to the Trivial Gods.
The second game of the evening came as the result of an invitation from the aforementioned Hamma Thyme. We joined forces with them at the Flea Market just as the answers to the first question of the game were being tabulated. Flying the flag of their moniker and displaying a strong showing in categories ranging from news to movie quote recognition to astronomy, our weakest link was revealed when we failed to identify any of the characters shown on screen from the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie. Fortunately, few teams knew the names either and thus we still went into the final two questions with a respectable 66 points, enough to yield a tie for the lead.
The final categories were Christmas Finance and Christmas Movies, leading to the team balls being firmly against the wall with ten points per question being wagered. Failing to identify two of the four items given in the song "The 12 Days of Christmas" that did not go up in price from last year, we struck back by successfully answering that Michael Caine played Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol thanks to the same question being asked in our previous game at Record Bar.
Still tied for first place after that madness, Carissa vanquished the representative from our competition with the tie breaking question "Guess a Reindeer". Victory and $70 were ours (and Hamma Thyme's).
The triumphs of the evening have established a high water mark for Roghat as we have taken home prize money in each of the past four games we've played. Tipped to its existence by Hamma Thyme, we have competed on a regular basis at O'Dowd's in Zona Rosa. Abandoning the brackishness that was The Brick, we have found refuge in the friendly confines of the Northland with its younger crowds and fun mid-round bonus questions. After a slow start to gauge final question betting strategy, we manage to land in the money the majority of the time, with a few first place finished sprinkled in.
Noghat wishes all a Merry Christmas and will hopefully unwrap more victories in the days ahead.
